Recently the governor of a certain southern state, who shall go nameless, ( hint: his last name is the same as a popular brand of toliet paper ) , stated that anthropology is not a science. So , let us consider if the field of dentistry is a science.

From the ADA  :Dentistry is the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention, and/or treatment of disorders/conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body provided by the dentist.

The word science comes from the Latin "scientia," meaning knowledge. definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."  definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."  definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."       mmm  ,,,,   dddddddd      sddfffsdwdwewrifanefkjendfkdnf                                   kkkThe definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," (oh, like a dental "practice" ?)  or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws. Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained using that system. Less formally, the word science often describes any systematic field of study or the knowledge gained from it.

Science as defined above is sometimes called pure science to differentiate it from Applied Science, which is the application of research to human needs.

Dentistry is thus an Applied Science. ....               till next time

Many patients are probabaly not aware that many dental offices, especially some of the large "chains"  { I won't mention names, but one rhymes with "toast" } , are having there dental lab work such as crown done by labs in China , or eastern europe. This is done for one reason..to cut costs. I find this morally aprehensible. We have been using Avante Garde lab here in Tampa ( owned by Michael and Jan Han) since they opened over 20 years ago.  I know exactly what materials are going into our crowns and dentures and I believe in keeping Americans employed.                                  till next time
